Bassil says UNHCR continues to register displaced Syrians, deems this unacceptable

July 27, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Expatriates and Foreign Affairs minister, Gebran Bassil, pointed out that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is still registering the displaced, saying that “this is unacceptable.”

“Some of the displaced Syrians are not truly displaced; accordingly, they should not be given displacement card,” Bassil said in a press conference on Monday related to the issue of registering the newly born displaced Syrians, confirming that the number of displaced Syrians increased in Lebanon despite the cabinet’s decision.

“We objected in Berlin conference on registering newly born babies in Lebanon,” Bassil said, confirming that the interior ministry is facilitating their registration in the foreign records.

Bassil confirmed “the steps carried out by UNHCR as for registering Syrian babies in Lebanese records violates international laws as well as the state laws.”
