Bassil: Efforts of international coalition must be multiplied to fight IS, extremist groups

FEBRUARY 10, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Gebran Bassil who is currently visiting Belgium said Tuesday in an interview at the Belgian Federal Parliament that the international coalition should increase its efforts to combat ISIS (Daesh) and extremist groups that have become a scourge.

The Lebanese Minister compared these terrorist organizations to a plague or a cancer and said their perils would extend to reach Europe, if the world does not act to eradicate them.

According to Bassil, the international coalition against Daech is not sufficient as it is necessary for it to multiply its efforts in countering terrorism.

“These groups have nothing to do with Islam, the religion of tolerance and love,” he explained.

The Minister outlined the sacrifices made by the Lebanese Army in the fight, calling upon the world to assist the army in this confrontation.

The foreign minister finally confirmed Lebanon’s commitment to the international resolution 1701 and to the presence of the UNIFIL in southern Lebanon.
