MUSCAT: Muscat Municipality feels that an automated parking lot can be a good option for Muttrah, which is crowded during most part of the day and sees a manifold increase in traffic on weekends and holidays.
“The drawback of this place is that it has very few parking lots. We are keen to address this problem in our Muttrah Integrated Infrastructure and Redevelopment Plan by having an automated car parking system,” Al Tayeb bin Mohammed Alharthy, director of technical studies in Muscat Municipality’s Directorate General of Technical Affairs told Muscat Daily.
“In this system, the driver takes his car to the parking lot’s entrance and the automated system does the rest. He can retrieve it with the press of a button. It is unlike a multi-storeyed parking lot wherein the person has to park the vehicle himself,” he said.
Alharthy said Muttrah is a mirror of Oman’s culture and heritage and a popular place among citizens, expatriates and tourists. “There are a lot of places to visit in Muttrah like the fish market, the Bait al Baranda museum, the corniche, the Al Lawatiya Mosque, the Jama Mosque, the popular Muttrah Souq and Port Sultan Qaboos,” he said, adding that the plan is currently in the study phase. “Everyone wants to park their car nearest to the place of shopping.
If needed, we might go for a system where people can park their cars at a particular spot and take a shuttle bus that will drop to their location. Our plan is to ease the traffic congestion in Muttrah and make people’s visit to the area a pleasant experience.”
