Asiri: Arms donation reflects Saudi prudence on Lebanon’s stability

APRIL 22, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Awad Asiri said that “the Saudi donation is a wise decision to preserve Lebanon and control its borders and stability.”

He added that the $3B gift to equip the Army with French arms was a decision taken by the late King Abdallah bin Abdel Aziz after former President Michel Sleiman had briefed him on the size of challenges which the Lebanese Army was facing as result of the Syrian war.

Asiri stressed that this donation is delivered to the Lebanese Army and to all Lebanese sects, he said in an interview with “France 2”.

Regarding the Yemen’s war, he said that the “Firmness Storm’s purpose was not to destroy Yemen but to restore Yemen’s unity.”

He hoped that infrastructure would be reconstructed in Yemen soon, stressing that the Kingdom would support any Gulf State through political solutions and constructive dialogue.

Responding to a question on the repercussions of western nuclear deal with Iran, Asiri said “Saudi considers Iran a neighbor and Muslim country and this issue is not related to us but is related to the west states and Iran alone.”

He hoped that Iran would change its behavior and stop meddling in the regional states.
