Fisheries: Morocco Open to Partnerships Aligned with Common Interests (Minister)

Rabat – Morocco “is open to diversified partnerships which take into consideration common interests, fully respect the sovereignty of each party and aim to promote mutual understanding”, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, Mohamed Sadiki, said Tuesday.

Speaking at the House of Councilors’ question time, Sadiki underlined that these partnerships must also be based on “the sustainable management of marine resources in the Moroccan waters, the protection of the national maritime economy and the preservation of the kingdom’s sovereignty over all its waters and its exclusive economic zone’.*

He also noted that the fisheries agreement between the Kingdom of Morocco and the EU has been in force for 30 years, and it is currently being implemented through a series of bilateral agreements and executive protocols.

Sadiki pointed out that the last protocol signed in 2019 expired on July 17, 2023, considering that its renewal ‘remains mainly linked to an EU position’.

Regarding i
nternational markets, Sadiki said that Morocco is present in various markets across the five continents “thanks to its accumulated experience, through the supply of high-quality fishing products and full compliance with product safety standards’.

The fisheries sector presents significant export and development potential, he stressed, expressing the Kingdom’s readiness “to study all new proposals and any negotiations in this regard on the basis of available resources”.
