Portolano from Defense Ministry: situation in south stable, cooperation with army solid

November 19, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defense, Samir Moqbel, met on Thursday at his office in the ministry with UNIFIL General Commander, General Luciano Portolano, accompanied by a military delegation and a number of his assistants.

Talks generally touched on the current security situation in Lebanon and the broader Arab region.

Portolano informed his host of the current situation in southern Lebanon within the scope of work of the peacekeepers, and the activities carried out by them, especially the good relations and entrenched cooperation with the locals and the Lebanese army.

“I had a special meeting with Minister Moqbel, whereby we discussed the security situation in Lebanon and the region. I expressed to him and to the Lebanese government the UNIFIL condolences on the martyrdom of victims in the fresh explosions in Beirut. We also dwelt on the situation in the south, and I hailed the solid cooperation between us and the Lebanese army as well as the intelligence services,” Portolano told reporters following the meeting.

“The situation is now stable. I would like to express to the Lebanese army, the southerners, the spiritual leaders, and the representatives of the government, my gratitude and respect for their cooperation in the south which is now considered the calmest region, not just in Lebanon, but also in the Middle East,” he concluded.
