MUSCAT: The Oman National Transport Company (ONTC) on Sunday was rebranded as ‘Mwasalat’, and introduced its new fleet of buses. Mwasalat means ‘transport’. The buses will start operating from November 22, an official said.

Forty low-floor red-colour buses will operate in Muscat while ten larger white buses will run between cities. Speaking on the occasion, H E Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Salim al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications said that there are plans to introduce a light rail system within the next seven years.

He said the Ministry of Transport and Communications is working with the ROP and Muscat Municipality to open lanes dedicated to buses possibly by next year. “More than 60 bus stations will be set up,” H E Dr Futaisi said.

The light rail system would replace certain bus routes, he said. An official said the changes represent a new emphasis as part of the public transportation plan 2015-20. H E Dr Futaisi said Mwasalat will implement the five-year plan.
