MUSCAT: The Ministry of Manpower (MoM) is offering a digital certificate for job seekers to help prove their identity in order to conduct online transactions.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Asila Mohammed al Kalbany, director of MoM’s information systems and Internet applications department, MoM, said, “This is part of our e-services programme and it is meant to authenticate the legitimacy of communications, interactions and possible transactions between the sender and the receiver.

“A digital certificate is used as an attachment to an e-mail message for security purposes and to verify the authenticity of the sender for important communication between different entities.”

Asila added that the certificate will facilitate an additional level of protection. “Through this facility the employer will know that information submitted by job seekers is genuine.”

The Information Technology Authority’s (ITA) National Digital Certification Center is issuing these certificates. “This digital certificate is being issued by a trusted agency and it contains the name of the holder, a serial number, expiry date, a copy of the certificate holder’s public key (used for encrypting messages and digital signatures) and the digital signature of the certificate-issuing authority (CA),” said Asila.

To avail this facility through PC or mobile phone or the e.Oman portal/kiosk, one must first have this feature embedded in the national identity cards. An official from ITA said, “Those availing the facility will have to activate the service at the e.Oman kiosk/portal.”

Asila said, “Identity cards issued from July 14, 2013 onwards have this feature embedded.”

The certificate is also embedded in PKI-enabled SIM cards and authentication tokens or smart cards supplied by ITA.
