Mikati calls for practical solutions, electing president

November 20, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Former Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on Friday renewed calls “to reach practical solutions to the crises battering the country,” highlighting the necessity of electing a president of the republic in the first place, as well as of agreeing over a new election law that would allow the Lebanese to choose a political class meeting their aspirations.

Mikati made these remarks during a ceremony organized by al-Azem University in Tripoli, in honor of former president of the social care institutions in Lebanon, Mohammad Barakat, in presence of a number of political and spiritual figures, among whom Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdullatif Darian.

At the beginning of the event, Mikati asked attendees to observe a minute of silence over the martyrdom of victims killed during the double attack on Burj al-Barajneh last week.

He then hoped that solidarity among the Lebanese would be mirrored in the political life in order to find solutions to the current problems.

“The work of the government must never stop, regardless of the circumstances, so as to safeguard security and national economy that is ailing,” Mikati stressed, before highlighting the need of agreement and cooperation among the Lebanese in general and the sons of the same sect in particular.

For his part, Mufti Darian avowed that the solution to the problems in the country lied within the election of a new head of the Lebanese state.
