Lassen visits Lebanese Army around Arsal

November 12, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) The Charge d’Affaires/Head of the Delegation of the European Union, Ambassador Christina Lassen, visited today the headquarters of the 8th Brigade of the Lebanese Army near Arsal. She discussed with Lebanese Army representatives the security situation in the town and along the Eastern Lebanese border in light of the repercussions of the Syrian crisis on Lebanon. Discussions also focused on the situation of the local population and the Syrian refugees in the town.

Ambassador Lassen paid tribute to the continuous efforts and sacrifices by the Lebanese Army to protect the Lebanese borders. She strongly condemned the repeated attacks perpetrated by extremist groups against the Army and called for the release of the servicemen who were abducted in Arsal last year.

“The European Union commends all the efforts by the Lebanese Army and the security forces in responding to the security challenges Lebanon is currently confronted with,” said Ambassador Lassen. “As the difficult security situation persists at the Eastern borders, the EU is fully aware of the huge challenges faced by the Army,” she added.

Ambassador Lassen stressed that the EU and its Member States have stepped up their assistance to the Lebanese Army to help it maintain security and stability in the country and respond to complex security threats, and will remain actively engaged in this respect. Since 2006, the EU and its Member States total financial support to the Lebanese Army has reached around 74.5 million Euro.

Ambassador Lassen also confirmed the EU’s willingness to support Lebanon in its fight against terrorism.
