Kataeb Leader: Let’s elect President immediately

November 12, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Kataeb Party Leader, Sami Gemayel, on Thursday stepped up calls on the Lebanese to “elect a president immediately”. The lawmaker warned that otherwise, the House of Parliament would be held responsible for breaching the constitution and turning against the Lebanese Republic.

Gemayel’s words came on his way out of the today’s legislative session, which he deemed “unconstitutional”.

“There exist no legal obstacles that could prevent us from electing a president. We stand today as an electoral rather than legislative body. We should elect a president immediately as per item 75 of the Lebanese constitution,” he added.

Addressing Speaker of the House, Nabih Berri, Gemayel echoed concerns that living without a president has gotten the Lebanese used to the idea that the presidency is no longer a necessity.

“Today, we are also getting them used to the idea that respecting the constitution is no necessity either,” Gemayel warned.
