Bassil: Russia’s role element of balance in region

November 19, 2015 (REFERRING TO THE NATIONAL NEWS AGENCY – LEBANON) Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Gebran Bassil concluded his visit to Russia and held a press conference where he stressed that “Russia’s role is the element that achieves balance in the region”.

The minister said “terrorism forms danger on the region and the world,” stressing that from the beginning Lebanon had called for the alliance of coalition against terrorism to prevent the spread of it.

Bassil added that the front should be fortified against terrorism at financial, intellectual and political level.

He added that talks highlighted bilateral ties between both states.

On the other hand, he said “Lebanon enjoys a leading and active role in the global battle against terrorism”.

He pointed to the second danger, “the Syrian refugees which has started to take a variety of forms and has started to threaten Europe”.

“I asked Russia during my meeting with senior officials to help us and list the displacement issue as a main article on the agenda of Vienna table,” Bassil said, pushing for a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

Bassil said that there was an international awareness to preserve Lebanon’s stability in a bid to evade the big security blast. “But this is not enough we are asked to be responsible and prevent any foreign intervention in Lebanon’s affairs,” he asserted.

The minister urged the need to hold Lebanon’s presidential elections, to approve an electoral law and to hold the parliamentary elections.

Bassil confirmed that dialogue would be a must in a country like Lebanon as it would ease tension.

“We are in a middle of a world war from one country to another against terrorism, and the strong

Lebanon would be able to defeat and overcome terrorism” the minister emphasized.

“We have lots of crises and the Lebanese unite over lots of common positions and on top of them the fight of terrorism,” he said.

Lastly, Bassil thanked Russia for not meddling in Lebanon’s affairs.
